Oh brothers, what an amazing journey

Oh brothers, what an amazing journey

If there is one predictable element in Wes Anderson's latest film, The Darjeeling Limited, it is just how unpredictable it is.

Like Anderson's previous films The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore and The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou his latest offering is nearly impossible to categorise.

It has elements of a travel adventure, it is partly family drama, it is often funny and sometimes downright bizarre.

It centres around three American brothers, played by Adrien Brody, Owen Wilson and Jason Schwartzman, who travel together on a train journey across India to rekindle their failing family relationships.

The journey starts as a spiritual quest organised by the micro-managing eldest brother Francis (Wilson) that is derailed by the brothers' inability to get along but which finds its own natural resonance in each brother's life.

The casting of the usually very serious Brody (best known for his Oscar-winning turn in The Pianist) opposite the comedic Wilson at first feels like an unnatural fit.

But it does make sense.

In The Darjeeling Limited, Anderson has placed brotherly capsicum spray fights and petty squabbles over clothes and food alongside an examination of the roles of family and pain of death.

And, as with all Anderson films, The Darjeeling Limited does all of this in style.

The brothers spend most of the film travelling in suits (the Indian heat apparently doesn't bother them) and drag along with them an incredible array of designer luggage.

The Darjeeling Limited is not a life-changing movie possibly it is not even a mood-changing movie but it is a film that takes its audience in unexpected directions.

And, in an age of the predictable, made-to-fit-Hollywood blockbuster, unpredictability is a breath of fresh air for cinema audiences.
