Bundanoon, we won't be following your lead

28 Oct, 2009 12:00 AM
WOLLONDILLY councillors have voted against supporting a voluntary ban on bottled water in the shire.

At last week's meeting, Cr Michael Banasik asked that a report be bought back to councillors about the logistics and benefits of banning the sale of plastic water bottles.

But he was supported only by Cr Simon Landow.

Cr Judy Hannan said the council should simply encourage people to pack their own water bottles.

``If a mum forgets to pack a water bottle and her child is thirsty what is she going to buy, Coke?'' Cr Hannan said.

``Bundanoon was one small tourist town but we are talking about supplying water bubblers across the whole shire. I think the report is a waste of time and money.''

Cr Benn Banasik said he didn't want the matter to be confused with the Theresa Park water-bottling facility.

``There is a huge amount of logistics needed for this,'' he said. ``It needs to be a grass roots campaign not something from the council.''

At last week's Campbelltown Council meeting, proposals for public bubblers also met a hostile reaction.

Cr Russell Matheson said bubblers would attract vandals. Others said they could be breeding grounds for illnesses such as swine flu.

The council will now investigate whether its own supplier of bottled water is sourcing water in a sustainable way.
