 Call for smokers' bins

Call for smokers' bins

18 Nov, 2009 10:51 AM
WOLLONDILLY councillor Michael Banasik says there should be ''no butts about it'' and at Monday night's council meeting he asked that the council consider introducing butt bins in commercial and public areas around the shire.

The council voted for a report on the cost and environmental benefits of the bins.

Cr Banasik said: ``I've seen these bins in the commercial areas of Sydney, and other areas, and I think they are a great idea.

``Environmentally it's pretty ugly having butts all over our commercial areas and it's a bushfire issue.''

Cr Judy Hannan said the bins would lessen the risk of fires as they are made to prevent other material being inserted.

The proposal follows the council's ban on smoking within 10metres of playgrounds and sportsgrounds.

Cr Banasik said other councils had implemented the same policies and Shoalhaven Council was looking at banning smoking in outdoor areas.

``I don't think the bins will cost too much and I think this will help our environment,'' he said.

``We could position them near our rubbish bins.''
