 Carers' support takes flight

Carers' support takes flight

16 Sep, 2008 04:00 AM
A SEA of umbrellas and raincoats covered Tahmoor Oval on Sunday as Wollondilly braved the weather to support a lifesaving service for the shire.

This weekend the community raised more than $30,000 for CareFlight bringing our three-year total up to $100,000.

Organisers Di Clarke and Diana Lange said they thought the rain would keep everyone away.

``We are astounded to pull in that figure with the wet weather,'' Ms Lange said.

``The support of the community is just amazing.''

The rain didn't stop families visiting the displays, animal farm and dog shows or taking a ride in the CareFlight helicopter simulator.

Chairman of the service Ian Badham visited the community day for the first time this year.

He said CareFlight was called out to six rescues every day in Australia, regularly visiting our region, so it was great to see the Wollondilly community show its support despite the bad weather.

``We are very impressed with the turnout and the interest level of the community,'' he said.

``This was the very first time the flight simulator has been on display for people to see and it's been very popular.''

Members of Tahmoor Lions Club were busy all day with a long line of umbrellas queued up at the barbecue.

All of the money raised by the club will go directly to CareFlight, thanks to the generous donation of all the meat by Beno's Family Meats in Tahmoor.

By noon the rain was at its heaviest as locals braved the windy conditions for the major auction, hosted by C91.3 radio announcer Pat McGeown.

Ms Lange said she was amazed that so many people sat in the wind and rain to bid on the items.

``We saw one man stand there with his laminated number over his head waiting to bid,'' she said.

``We are ecstatic that everyone is so passionate about CareFlight and continue to support the event each year.''

The auction was cut short and several items are still open for bidding on the CareFlight website. Go to communitycareflight
