Decision time: historic hall's impact to be assessed

03 Feb, 2010 08:16 AM
WOLLONDILLY Shire Council has requested a heritage impact statement for the Menangle School of Arts hall. Council works manager Justin Nyholm said the hall was in a heritage precinct.

``The statement would assess the impact demolition of the building would have on Menangle's heritage and document details of the building for historical records,'' he said. ``A development application will be lodged after we've received the heritage impact statement and the community will also be consulted prior to any proposed demolition of Menangle School of Arts Hall.''

Former hall committee president James McFarlane wants the ``unique cultural facility'' preserved.

``We had the highest usage rate of any hall in Wollondilly up until its closure in 2005,'' he said.

``The hall was closed due to occupational health and safety issues and yet it probably had fewer problems than many of the old halls in Wollondilly.

``The council needs to inject the required money and resources into it and ensure that it's maintained for another 100 years.''

Let us try and preserve what heritage we have rather than destroy it. This is particularly the case with community facilities. Surely, either the State Government or Wollondilly Council or both should show some leadership and upgrade the Hall so that it can once again be used as a community facility rather than demolishing it.
