 Heartbeat from death

Heartbeat from death

30 Jun, 2009 02:08 PM
CASSY Ciampa was minutes from death when her heart rate reached 300 beats per minute as she slept at Liverpool Hospital.

The Oakdale teenager, 19, was taken to the hospital in March this year after she fainted at a bakery in Camden.

The young actor hit her head on the counter and the floor of the bakery when she fell.

Miss Ciampa said her mum was waiting outside and wondered why her daughter was taking so long.

``Mum saw the ambulance arrive and thought I must have been in there helping someone,'' Miss Ciampa said.

``When she came in and saw me I was blue.''

At Liverpool Hospital Miss Ciampa was cleared of any head injuries and underwent tests to determine why she had passed out.

She had come close to fainting four months earlier while working as a living statue at Andre Rieu's pre-dinner drinks in Sydney.

Whilst Miss Ciampa waited for her test results, her heart went into the arrhythmia which could have killed her had she not been in the hospital.

She said she was asleep when her heart rate reached 300 beats per minute.

Miss Ciampa was diagnosed with Long QT Syndrome and had major heart surgery to have a defibrillator implanted one week later.

Long QT Syndrome is a serious heart condition which effects one in 5000 people, often with sudden unexplainable death.

Miss Ciampa said she was currently taking some time off work but hoped to continue her acting career once she recovered.

``The other night the defibrillator gave me four shocks because I was crying and my heart rate was over 200,'' she said.

``It feels like a horse is kicking you in the chest and you're not in control of what's

happening so it's a scary thing.''
