KOORIS on the Move Landcare Group has been recognised at the Hawkesbury Nepean Landcare Awards for its work to protect the Stonequarry Creek in Picton.
The group received the Indigenous Landcare Award at a recent ceremony for its dedication to protecting the stream banks of the creek from the invasion of weeds and to manage erosion that is silting the creek.
A spokeswoman for the council said the project aimed to improve the quality of water in the creek, prevent soil loss and provide habitat for native fauna and provide a setting for the Aboriginal community to connect with the land.
``This project was a partnership between the Kooris on the Move, Wollondilly Greencorp Group and Wollondilly Community Nursery,'' the spokeswoman said.
``The hard work was done by a combination of the youth in Greencorp group and the experienced hands of the Kooris on the Move Group.''
Wollondilly Mayor Michael Banasik said he was pleased to attend the awards ceremony last week.
``The award was gratefully received on behalf of the group by members Greg Wood and Deb Tougher,'' Cr Banasik said. ``This project received plenty of support by the Wollondilly Community Nursery, including the supply of all the plants and the council staff also provided assistance and advice on plant selection and placement. It's been a great initiative and we're proud of recognition received for Kooris on the Move.''
Ron and Robin Davies, of Werombi, were highly commended at the awards for their work at the Wollondilly Community Nursery and participation in the Barragal and Redbank landcare groups in Picton and Camden.
