Killer road: Picton Road timeline

April 2008: Police constable Elise Krejci dies and her fiance, fellow police officer Brett Wright, is badly injured in a crash on Picton Road.

June 2008: Grandfather Mark Lucaci, 49, is killed when his van collides with another van and a fuel tanker.

June 2008: Wollongong transport expert Philip Laird calls for an immediate reduction in the speed limit.

July 2008: A semitrailer veers and sheds 50 tonnes of steel pipes in the path of traffic. Police say it was a miracle no one was killed.

August 2008: Camden police and Wollondilly Shire Council appeal to the State Government. Police say more fatal accidents are likely because of the extra 35,000 truck movements a year expected on Picton Road due to the Port Kembla expansion.

February 2009: A motorcyclist, 54, is killed when thrown from his motorbike after striking an oncoming car.

February 2009: A woman, 65, dies in a head-on crash.

February 2009: The Government announces a $12million safety improvement program.

December 2009: Five members of a family are killed when their car veers into the path of a water tanker.

January 2010: A man in his 30s dies after his car veers onto the wrong side of the road and collides head-on with another car.
