 Mac attack causes split

Mac attack causes split

14 Oct, 2009 08:50 AM
WOLLONDILLY Shire councillors are split over an application for a McDonald's restaurant in Picton.

The plan for golden arches on Argyle Street should be decided at Monday night's council meeting.

And in an odd twist, a yet-to-be-born baby could decide its fate.

The application for a restaurant, drive-through service and cafe was lodged in November 2008 and deferred at the August meeting with requests from councillors for a ``traffic solution''.

As it stands, four councillors support the application, three are against and two are undecided.

Councillors Michael Banasik, Benn Banasik and Simon Landow are firmly against the proposal and Crs Col Mitchell, Shane Read, Cassandra Twarloh and Robert Khan support the development.

Crs Judy Hannan and Michael Beshara are still undecided, with concerns about traffic in Argyle Street; however, Cr Beshara said he was generally in favour of McDonald's eateries as ``good for the community and for young people to find jobs, and a good meeting place for people ... but there are some negatives with the traffic which I still need to look at closely.''

Cr Hannan said she did not think she could support the application because there were still no firm plans in place to provide a traffic solution for the development.

The new report, which came following meetings between the council staff, McDonald's and the RTA last month, recommends that the application be approved.

Cr Twarloh was undecided at the August council meeting but said she was now in favour.

``For me, the crunch point was a chat I had with the road traffic committee who said young kids on their P-plates were driving over Razorback late at night to go to a McDonald's it's not safe,'' she said. ``I understand the negatives but for me the pros outweigh the cons. I hope to have my baby before the meeting so I can be there to vote.''

Cr Twarloh is expecting her first child next week, which means the controversial vote could end up being split 4-4.

If so, the mayor will make the deciding vote usually based on the council staff's recommendation which supports the application.

So if Cassandra has to go to hospital to have her baby the decision will be to approve McDonald's or if she has her vote in the meeting she will vote to approve it, sounds to me like it will be approved either way.

Unless Beshara back flips and votes against it. Then we could be in trouble.
