McDonald's in Picton clears final hurdle

18 Nov, 2009 10:59 AM
A LAST-DITCH attempt to stop a McDonald's in Picton was defeated at Monday night's meeting of Wollondilly Shire Council.

Councillors Michael Banasik, Benn Banasik and Simon Landow had lodged a rescission motion at last month's meeting, which forced the issue to be decided again.

But there was a non-debate, with the three councillors who lodged the motion out-voted. Cr Michael Banasik tried to ignite discussion, to no avail, by saying the McDonald's sign was ``still quite big''.

``But I can see that most councillors want it,'' he said. ``The tribe has spoken.''

Mayor Col Mitchell told the Advertiser the sign had already been reduced to six metres high and the motion was an anticlimax.

``He didn't get any speakers,'' he said. ``It was all over in five minutes.

``We're all discussed out. Over the past month and six weeks, a number of people have held me up on the street and said, `McDonald's will go through won't it?'''

Residents have flooded the Advertiser's website with comments, mostly in favour of the fast-food restaurant opening. Many say it will bring more job opportunities.

Have your say on the Macca's final approval below.

Congratulations Picton on McDonalds! Those who voted for it should be proud as now we can be just like everyone else. Unemployment will fall, and we no longer need worry about becoming a ghost town. And the best argument of all for it is that teenagers won't be driving over Razorback to go to a Maccas any more. Good on ya. Steve

How dare you! It's one of the historic town not a CBD! You are allowing an American Fast Food Chains to dominate Australia by adding more of them fiendish slime to our nation!
