 McDonald's opponents' last chip

McDonald's opponents' last chip

28 Oct, 2009 11:04 AM
RESIDENTS who are strongly opposed to Golden Arches in historic Picton are pinning their hopes on a last-ditch bid to block the fast-food restaurant.

Councillors Michael Banasik, Benn Banasik and Simon Landow have lodged a rescission motion, which means the controversial McDonald's approval will have to be debated again on November 16.

Locals have flooded the Wollondilly Advertiser website to have their say about last week's council decision.

Most of the comments are in favour.

The development application for was supported by Mayor Col Mitchell and councillors Shane Read, Michael Beshara and Robert Khan.

They said it would bring more job opportunities for young people in the area.

Cr Judy Hannan joined Cr Banasik and Cr Landow to vote against the proposal because of concerns with the traffic management plan.

Cr Cassandra Twarloh went into labour on Monday at 3pm and was unable to attend the meeting.

Here's what some locals had to say on our website:

``Why do we need traffic lights in Picton when Tahmoor has traffic from Woolworths, KFC, a bank, bakery and House Warehouse all coming out on to the same road without lights? As if one McDonald's in Picton is going to create more traffic than that. There are lots more people living in and driving through Tahmoor than Picton. Let Maccas come these councillors don't know what traffic is.Maggie

``I still think it should have gone to Picton Road, Maldon or at Tahmoor where the nursery was. Another Campbelltown is coming. markm

``Stop wasting ratepayers' money, Cr Banasik, on your ongoing crusade to bring Picton to a grinding halt! McDonald's and traffic lights will bring a breath of fresh air to stilted, old Picton. Camden is dying a slow death due to not moving with the times. Let's not send Picton down the same path!Deb

``All they need to do is put in a crossing across Argyle Street in front of McDonald's and another one somewhere along Cliffe Street.''Robert Carlin

``Are councillors aware of the chronic and growing levels of child obesity in Australia? Do they understand how this development will change the character of our community forever and will affect our small business culture, particularly cafes, that have been part of the enduring appeal of Picton? Why do they think other communities throughout Australia have fought tooth and nail against the globalisation of this fast food chain? We do not have to let this happen.''Mark Viner

Concerning that fiendish golden arches. I agree that we chuck out any fast food chains that has been dominating our Australian culture. Picton is a heritage place and love going there. If the golden arches enters our heritage Picton, then, I'll not go back there ever again. Unless the Wollondilly Council disapproves the Maccas application.

I think that the residents don't know the positive effects of this if they are against it. They mustnt own their own shop in Picton or they would most likely approve. I would like to have an opportunity to get a job at Mcdonalds being a teenager! Stop being selfish and trying to fight against something that should be in picton! We have 100 pubs and a tattoo parlour why is Mcdonalds so bad?!

Just build McDonalds and put a round-a-bout in. That intersection has needed one for years. Its very hard to turn right out of Margaret street in the afternoons there and has been for as long as I can remember. I think It will also help Emergency services vehicles with faster easier access onto the main street with the entrance into the police station being on Margaret street and the ambulance station being on the main street a matter of metres from the intersection where the round-a-bout will be.

Hi... Can I say that all you Ignorant "GENERATION Y" type people are completely out of control... Wow "Help our sleepy little town... Big bad Maccas is on the way..." Pulease... Do you people actually understand that having a maccas in Picton will boost our Tourism industry and create jobs for those very same kids that terrorise our town on their skateboards and Scooters... Give it a rest. Let Maccas have their store. Poor old Picton with it's overpriced Cafe's and Pubs... Oh no what will we do? My wife and I are totally all 100% for it... I'd rather drive the 5 to Picton for a CHEAP meal than waste $10 in Fuel and 15 mins driving to Narellan. So... Stuff you people against it. LET MACCAS IN.

McDonalds will not promote or benefit tourism. If people want to see a McDonalds, they can see several in the Campbelltown and Liverpool areas and numerous other suburbs. The tourism positive for Picton is the historical value and lack of commercial attractions. If McDonalds does have to take over some day at least ensure that it is built in an industrial part of town not the main street. Most of us live here for the rural character. If I wanted to live next door to McDonalds I could have stayed in Sydney. We can turn the site in question into something of far greater value in the community to offer youth by way of entertainment and jobs and provide profit for local businesses/farmers by thinking outside the circle for once. I say a definate NO to McDonalds.

Let's just either, protest against it, put in a partition againgst it or both so that we can get rid of that fiendish Maccas.
