Meet Michael - one of the reasons we back this great cause each year

HE snapped his leg above the knee and now has two large metal pins holding it together.

But Michael Schelks, 10, can't wait to get back on his motorbike.

He was yet another local kid to be helped by the CareFlight helicopter.

This service visits the Macarthur region on a near-weekly basis and, since 2006, our community has said ``thank you'' with our annual CareFlight fund-raising days at Tahmoor. So far, more than $100,000 has been raised.

Michael's injury last week wasn't life-threatening, but many others are.

The Picton boy was riding on his grandparents' property in Tahmoor on Saturday when he ran into a fence and his motorbike landed on top of him.

His mum, Cassie McCann, said she was slashing the grass in the same paddock when Michael came off the bike.

``He looked over to see where I was but when he turned back he was heading straight for the fence and it was too late to stop,'' she said.

``I didn't see it myself but he bounced off and the bike tumbled down on top of him and snapped his leg.

``When I ran over, my husband Paul was holding his neck and I thought he'd snapped his neck, but then Paul said look at his leg.''

Ms McCann called for an ambulance which arrived at the River Road property in Tahmoor within seven minutes.

She said it felt like forever.

``They were brilliant, especially one lady named Gabby,'' she said.

``They took over and calmed the whole situation down and told us that CareFlight was on the way. The CareFlight crew was brilliant too they drugged him up, put him on the chopper and flew straight to Westmead.''

Ms McCann said Michael couldn't wait to get back on the soccer field, back to school and back on his motorbike.

``He's a bit sore and badly bruised but doing well,'' she said. ``He would have been in so much pain.

``I was amazed at how good the ambulance and CareFlight were and how quickly they got there.''

This year's Wollondilly Community CareFlight Day will be held on Sunday, September 13 at Tahmoor Oval.

Organisers are looking for sponsors, assistance, community groups and displays for the day.
