New stormwater levy will help keep rivers healthy

30 Jun, 2009 12:00 AM
WOLLONDILLY ratepayers will pay a $25 stormwater levy each year following a decision by councillors last week.

The fee was passed as part of the council's management plan to improve stormwater management in residential areas of the shire.

Wollondilly Mayor Michael Banasik said without extra funding the council would not be capable of implementing even basic projects to improve the health of shire creeks and rivers.

``The money will be spent on projects to improve the health of our local waterways and minimise private property flooding ,'' he said.

``The charge is only applicable to those rated as residential or business.

``The levy will be charged annually on the rates notice, although pensioners are exempt.''

Every residential property in the shire will be charged $25, residential strata properties will be charged $12.50 and business premises will be charged between $25 and $325 (capped) depending on the land area.

Projects to be funded by the new charge may include the expansion of existing projects such as the Urban Waterways Management Framework and Kennedy Creek rehabilitation works.

The charge will appear on local rates notices as a separate item.
