EXTRA support is now within reach for parents who have a child with Down syndrome.
Local mums Glenda Graban, Kelly Charlton and Darien Gray have started a support group called The Right Start and they want parents who have children with the syndrome to get the help they need.
Mrs Graban, who lives in Picton, said they had started a morning coffee group and hoped to start visiting parents in hospital soon.
``We want to help people from day one so they know they have that support to make the journey a bit easier,'' she said.
``After I had Jake I just sat in the hospital and cried.
``We were basically just given the forms and sent home with no idea what to do.
``It was up to me to chase these services he needed, that's why I want to go to the hospitals now and visit these Mum's so they know what support is available for them.''
The support group recently met for the first time at Mater Dei, with 10 mums coming for morning tea.
``We're trying to start up a charity ... so we can help out with things like physio costs and give parents all the information so they know what they're entitled to,'' she said.
``If the support is there from the very beginning, then less money will be needed for respite later.''
The group are designing shirts for the children and local businessman Paul Hillbrick is donating flowers for the group to give to the mums when they visit them for the first time in hospital.
The next morning tea will be held on Friday, September 25.
