Picton Rd toll hits 23 as January crash victim dies

03 Feb, 2010 02:15 PM
The Picton Rd toll has climbed to 23 in the past 10 years with the death overnight of a Gwynneville woman involved in a car accident last month.

Kaiyab Su, 42, was the passenger in a Mazda 3 when it collided with a dual-cab ute as the driver attempted a U-turn about 8km west of the Mt Ousley Rd junction on January 19.

The two drivers and Ms Su were taken to Wollongong Hospital, the woman with serious injuries.

Wollongong police said a report was being prepared for the coroner while the Southern Region Crash Investigation Unit was continuing its enquiries.

A total 23 people have been killed in 19 car crashes on Picton Rd between the Hume Hwy and Mt Ousley since 2000.

Roadworks are under way to widen sections of the road, which is mostly single lane in each direction with little room for error.

Barriers dividing oncoming traffic have been installed as part of a $15 million, joint State and Federal Government safety upgrade.

The works also include police bays to catch speeding drivers.
