NELL Tuero, from Thirlmere, is saving orphans in Borneo one orang-utan at a time.

On Sunday, November 15, she will hold an Orang-utan Awareness Day at Picton Memorial Park in Argyle Street from 11am to 3pm.

Activities include face painting, a jumping castle, colouring in, violin players and salsa dancing.

The Lions Club of Tahmoor will run a barbecue and devonshire tea stall to help raise money.

Mrs Tuero said the money raised would be split to help orphaned orang-utans.

``Half is going to Hardi Bankitoro who runs the Centre for Orang-utan Protection and the other half will go to Myaru Menteng Rescue Station where Hardi takes the orphaned orang-utans,'' Mrs Tuero said.

``The day is part of a week-long world-wide campaign for the plight of orang-utans.

``It will be a nice day for the family so we're encouraging everyone to bring their picnic blankets or chairs.''

Locals can learn more about orang-utans and disappearing rainforests on the day.

There is a gold coin entry fee.

Orang-utans living overseas will also be up for adoption for $55, tax deductable.

Details: Nell Tuero, 0432497649.
