Rocket challenge is a blast

04 Nov, 2009 10:37 AM
PICTON High School's Rocket Jockeys are off to Melbourne to compete in the National F1 in Schools technology challenge.

At the state finals last week, the team were awarded the NSW Professional Class Champions and Best Engineered Design for their race car.

The team's five members are resource manager Wade Lancaster, design engineer Luke Hilliar, graphic engineer Liam Simpson, manufacturing engineer Cameron Shanahan and team manager Sam White.

They will now represent their school at the national final in Melbourne during the F1 Grand Prix in March 2010.

Sam said her team's strength was in its original car design.

``Some of the other teams were very impressive so I think we did a great job,'' she said.

``We had to do a verbal presentation, engineer presentation, a portfolio and display presentation and then race the cars which was the fun bit.

``Cars and engineering is an area I've never been exposed to before but I love it and a career in the industry is definitely an option.''

Team teacher and mentor Tony Lane said the students worked exceptionally hard with lots of time spent on the project after school and in the holidays.

``The feedback from the judges was outstanding,'' he said. ``They are all very excited and looking forward to the Grand Prix.''

Sam said she couldn't wait to go to Melbourne.

``Before we go we need to update the design of the car and make it as fast as we can,'' she said.

``We also need to refine our presentations and our display because we want to make sure we get it as perfect as we can. Mr Lane has done so much for us over the last few months, staying after school and coming in during the holidays.''
