Speaking up on education

23 Jun, 2009 01:00 AM
PICTON High School student Sam Rasmussen has been selected as a regional ambassador for public education.

Sam, 13, was chosen from 242 students in Macarthur for his leadership, communication skills and contribution to his school's community.

A NSW Department of Education spokeswoman said Sam would lead by example and actively promote the good things public schools are doing.

``From a group of 242 pupils within this group, 20 exceptionally inspiring and talented students were appointed as the regional ambassadors,'' she said. ``These young people will be trained up in coming weeks into their super roles, which carry broader responsibilities.''

Sam said he thought he would make a good ambassador because he was never afraid to have a go.

``I have no trouble with teachers or students or rules,'' he said.

``I'm proud to identify as an indigenous student and participate in all Aboriginal cultural activities at the school. I help Aboriginal children in year 6 make the transition to high school by being a mentor.''

During the year Sam will mentor other ambassadors, create media coverage for public schools and be an advisor at other regional functions.
