SEATED, his feet could barely reach the floor, but Warragamba Public School's Jordan Powell beat all comers at the Premier's Spelling Bee 2008 state finals.
Last Wednesday, Jordan made national news as the 10-year-old from Silverdale who defeated 32 finalists from 71,000 public school pupils from all over NSW.
Sharon Moroney, his mother, said she was proud of her son. She said he had worked hard and was determined to get all the words right.
``Jordan's father and I were in the audience biting our fingernails with all the other parents,'' she said.
``It was very stressful and they were all so little. It was an absolute relief when he won, but it took a while to sink in.''
Jordan is in year 4. His principal at Warragamba Public School, Ben Matthews, said Jordan was an intelligent boy who excelled in all areas of school, particularly literacy.
``He has been very self-motivated in terms of his participation in the Premier's Spelling Bee,'' he said. ``And of course the students and staff at Warragamba are very, very proud of him. He spent the whole day receiving congratulations and has been very humble.''
Mrs Moroney said Jordan was pleased with his win and thrilled with his gold medal.
