TAFEs to benefit from $1m funding

23 Jun, 2009 01:00 AM
CAMPBELLTOWN and Macquarie Fields TAFE campuses have been awarded more than $1million in Federal Government funding to improve classrooms and technology.

Campbelltown TAFE will receive $875,000 and Macquarie Fields TAFE will receive $320,000 under the Rudd Government's Better TAFE Facilities initiative.

Liverpool and Miller TAFE campuses also received funding.

Director of TAFE's south-western Sydney institute, Barry Peddle, said the funding would go to upgrading equipment and wireless technology in classrooms as well as student services.

``It's about making sure the students have got a good, healthy, happy environment to be in,'' he said.

The money will also allow the TAFE to harvest water and re-use it across campuses.

Mr Peddle said the student participation at the south-western Sydney institute had grown by a ``couple of percent'' this year alone.

``We've changed the feel of the south-western Sydney Institute,'' he said. ``It's without question the leading institute in Australia.

``It serves probably the most diverse population.

``We've done a lot for people from socio-economic disadvantaged backgrounds.''

Barry Peddle recently received a Public Service Medal as part of the Queen's Birthday honours.

His career with TAFE spans more than 30 years and he is the founding director of government advisory body TAFE Directors Australia.

He also taught at the Campbelltown TAFE from 1981 to 1987.

Mr Peddle said the award was welcome recognition.

``I was very pleased with that. I see it as an honour for TAFE.''
