CHILDREN at Hart Aquatics Swim School in Buxton brushed up on water safety skills last week, inspired by one special little girl.
Hannah Plint was almost three when she drowned on October 4, 2007.
Her parents Andrew and Katherine set up Hannah's Foundation to prevent drowning and raise awareness about the dangers for children near water.
The foundation aimed to create the National Drowning Prevention, Awareness and Memorial Day on October 4 each year.
Alison Cox, owner of Hart Aquatics, met Mrs and Mrs Plint at a conference in Sydney and wanted to promote water safety at her swimming school as part of the memorial day.
She organised a week of water safety lessons to teach children rescue techniques that they could perform themselves.
``A lot of people think rescue is only about CPR but there's lots of things kids can do as well,'' she said.
``Quite often there are balls and things around the pool that children can use to help themselves.''
Hannah's Foundation is the only registered charity in Australia for drowning prevention, awareness and family support.
Mrs Cox said more than 50 children aged up to 15 drown in Australia every year.
``So it's a really important issue for us to look at and bring to the public attention,'' she said.
``This week has raised awareness for parents too.
``I heard some mums talking about pool fencing and their best defences to prevent drowning which is exactly what we wanted.''
