Toddler bitten by snake

20 May, 2008 01:00 AM
WHEN two-year-old Jackson

Sarhadian arrived at preschool on Thursday he had some big news to tell his classmates.

The Tahmoor boy had been

bitten by a snake, taken for a ride in an ambulance, spent the night in hospital and had even been on the TV news.

On Monday afternoon his mum, Aimee Sarhadian, was watching Jackson play in the backyard with his two dogs.

Ms Sarhadian said she thought Jackson picked up a stick to play with until she saw it move.

``He picked it up with his right hand Steve Irwin-style and it

flicked back around and bit him on the left hand,'' she said.

``When I saw it move I felt utter panic. From a distance it looked like a brown snake which I knew was a lethal snake.''

Ms Sarhadian ran outside, grabbed Jackson and frantically called his dad, her parents and an ambulance.

She said she started to suck on Jackson's hand because she didn't know what else to do.

``Since then I have learnt that that is a big no no,'' she said.

``On the phone they went through the steps to put a

bandage on his arm until the ambulance arrived.''

Jackson was taken by ambulance and police escort to

Campbelltown Hospital but was transferred to the Children's Hospital at Westmead because Campbelltown did not have enough anti-venom to treat him.

Ms Sarhadian said that while they were in the ambulance

Jackson's dad went to the house and found a red-bellied black snake in the backyard.

``Once he called to say it wasn't a brown snake we knew Jackson was going to be all right,'' she said.

Ms Sarhadian said the kids crowded around Jackson when he arrived at school last week.

``He thought it was very exciting to have such big news to tell,'' she said.

``I'd like to say a big thank you to the hospital, ambulance staff and the police escort ,'' she said.

``Jackson is definitely back to his normal self.''
