TRAFFIC in Tahmoor should flow a little smoother with plans to improve safety on the main street underway.
The town now has a 50kmh speed zone along Remembrance Drive and new line markings should be in place by the end of this week.
The Tahmoor Chamber of Commerce has worked alongside Wollondilly Shire Council's traffic committee to complete the projects. Chamber spokeswoman Jacquelyn Dixon said foot traffic and vehicle traffic through Tahmoor had increased substantially in recent years.
``With developments such as the Tahmoor Town Centre and Wollondilly Anglican College nearby the 50kmh zone was essential,'' she said. ``This will benefit motorists, pedestrians and businesses in the area.''
New line markings along Remembrance Drive will clearly define the kerbside lane which has been dedicated as a parking lane.
Ms Dixon said the lane had always been intended for motorists to use when parking at the kerb.
``Unfortunately many motorists are using this lane as a second traffic lane at 60kmh and endangering the lives of motorists and pedestrians alike,'' she said.
``This could partly be because it is not clear that this lane is a parking lane so a new configuration of line marking should make this very clear.''
The council's traffic engineer, Choong Yam, said work on the linemarking and surround reflectors would begin today.
``The new line marking will enhance the message that the parking lane is for slow vehicles accessing the parking spaces,'' he said. ``Along with the 50kmh speed zone this will improve road safety in Tahmoor.''
