FORMER Wallaby Tony Daly hopes to make the Wollondilly White Waratahs bloom this season in their 10th anniversary year.
Daly, a 1991 World Cup-winning Wallaby, will coach the Waratahs first grade rugby union team on their return to the Illawarra District Rugby Union competition.
During his career as an Australian representative, Daly played in many major tournaments including the 1995 World Cup in South Africa, which the movie Invictus is based on.
Last season, as Sydney Harlequins coach, Daly saw some potential in Wollondilly's line-up in the NSW Suburban Rugby Union Jeffrey Cup competition.
``From what I saw from Wollondilly as opponents last season, the signs are there that it's a good team, they just need some fine-tuning,'' Daly said.
``I honestly believe if you have a season in that suburban rugby competition with the quality players there that you will become better.
``The 10th anniversary this season is a great inspiration for the club to succeed.
``I've already met some of the players and it's been a positive reaction.''
Daly's secret for success is to focus on basic training methods. ``I've taken a bit of knowledge from each coach I've played under,'' he said.
``I have some great drills and some tricks of the trade that's all relative to the game.''
The Waratahs will take on Engadine, the first team they played as a club in their debut year, in their first game of the season at Hannaford Oval, Wilton.
The local derby game against Camden is next on the agenda.
``It will be seen as a bit of a grudge match, but it's healthy competition and it's needed,'' Daly said.
< p>The club is also looking for junior players for the under 8s to under18s.
