TWO schoolboy rugby league players have been given a boost by winning Camden High School rugby league scholarships - one is a Picton Magpies junior.
The school's physical education teacher, Brendon Reeves, said it had been a difficult decision to choose two players from the 15 applicants, who would benefit from the $250 scholarship grant.
Dylan Slater, 12, and Rhyse Fawcett, 11, were the winners.
Rhyse plays for Picton juniors and Dylan plays for Camden Rams' juniors.
``The applicants had to write a summary on why they should win the scholarship and it was also based on what they've done in sport and representing the school in sport,'' Reeves said.
``They were excited; they were both pretty happy about winning.
``I'd heard some rumours about Dylan that he was very fast.
``I was surprised to see how small he was, they call him Speedy Gonzalez.
``But sometimes they turn out to be the really good players he's good for three tries a game and wants to be an asset for our Wests Leagues Cup team next year.''
Reeves believes the two boys could play important roles in helping the school's under-13 team beat rivals Elderslie High School in next season's schoolboy competition.
``Rhyse was picked for his dedication to the sport,'' Reeves said.
``He's won the best and fairest for his Camden side for three of the past four years.
``I'll be coaching the Wests Cup team next year and we could do with them in a good side.
``We want to beat Elderslie [High School], they beat us in both games this year, in the under-13s and under-15s.''
The boys could be playing in shiny boots next season if they take up their teacher's advice on how to spend their scholarship money.
``I'm hoping they'll put the money towards boots or some sporting equipment, but it's their money and it's up to them,'' he said.
