The Wilton wonders

18 Nov, 2009 11:07 AM
THREE Picton Public School pupils recently threw and jumped their way to sporting success.

The talented group from Wilton competed against the best junior athletes in NSW to achieve some great results at the State Primary Schools Sports Association's athletics carnival.

Representing the Sydney South West region, Renee Fassolis placed ninth in the discus event. Ryan Johnston, also competing in the discus, came 29th. Regional Girls 11 years champion Ruby Carroll placed 26th in the high jump and 32nd in the long jump.

Products of Douglas Park Little Athletics Club, all three athletes agreed they would be better for the experience of competing in front of a large crowd.

Ryan is a capable junior rugby union player who chooses to concentrate on athletics during the off-season.

``I could have done better but I was probably a bit nervous,'' Ryan said.

``My best throw is 34 metres but I threw 22 metres at the state championships.

High jumper Ruby agreed there were some tense moments trackside.

``I just couldn't do my best,'' she said.

``There were lots of people there and I jumped 1.25 metres and my best is 1.34 metres.''

Renee trains most weekdays to improve her discus-throwing style.

At the state carnival she threw 26 metres, a throw five metres short of her best.

``I felt a bit under pressure,'' she said. ``I'm just not used to that many people watching.''

School principal Lyn Fraser described the pupils' achievements as exceptional.

``They just do so well at these carnivals all the time,'' she said.
