Champ's '77 Torana thunders in perfect season

11 Nov, 2009 10:21 AM
EAGLE Vale motor racing driver Steven Lacey has won back-to-back, class 3D Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) NSW Supersprint Championships.

Retaining last year's title, driving his 1977 Torana SS, Lacey wrapped up this season's championship following his recent victory at Oran Park Raceway.

Lacey raced his way to a perfect season, winning all nine rounds in races at Oran Park, Eastern Creek and Wakefield park.

The 41-year-old also holds the CAMS NSW Supersprint lap record at all three circuits for his class.

With the state title secured for another season, Lacey is concentrating on a charge to take out the Australian Supersprint Championship at Phillip Island, Victoria, this weekend.

Although Lacey has raced many cars over the years, he prefers driving his trusty Torana, which he has owned for 16 years.

``I'll be trailering the Torana to Phillip Island,'' Lacey said.

``The format will be standing start and four flying laps, with the fastest flying lap being recorded per session.

``It is expected that we will run a minimum of four sessions per day.

``While enjoying the other cars, I still prefer the feel and noise of the older V8.

``The beauty of the Torana is you can run a 12-second pass at the Eastern Creek drags on a Wednesday night, cruise on a Friday or Saturday night and race at the circuit on Sunday.''

If he performs well on Saturday and Sunday, Lacey has Vince Macri of Macri Motors at Austral to thank for maintaining his vehicle, as well as his parents, who introduced him to the sport.

``Both my mother and father raced Minis and Toranas before I was born and for some time after, so I grew up with race cars in the garage,'' Lacey said.

``I bought the Torana in late 1993 and started running it on the circuit the next year. ``The car has remained road registered and is driven to most events with all of my tools and spares packed inside.''
