A heavy crash during the final day of the NSW State BMX Titles at Coffs Harbour has denied Buxton grandmother Irene Markee, 56, a NSW BMX title.
Heading into the event, Markee carried strong form after placing fourth overall in the BMX Tri Series for the Over 30s Women's class.
She finished third at Maitland and came fourth at Lake Macquarie and
Terrigal.
Competing in the 40-plus women's class at the NSW Titles, Markee dominated the opening day of competition.
Markee had a comfortable margin heading into the second day, but in the opening moto, she fell at the first corner after making contact with another rider.
"I don't recall too much of the incident, only the fact that I was leading heading into the opening corner before contact was made and from there I don't remember anything," Markee said. Despite only scoring points for the first moto on day two and failing to start in the next three races, Markee finished fourth overall.
She had a 15-year break from racing but returned last year to take third place in the NSW Titles.
"To miss out on a top NSW ranking due to a crash is certainly disappointing," Markee said.
"On the plus side, to be a winning contender in only my second year back in the sport after a 15-year break is really pleasing, as it proves I can still be competitive.
"That is something I'm very proud of as I have worked very hard over the past two years to get to where I am."
The Macarthur BMX Club member is sidelined until she recovers from the injuries she sustained during her fall and will miss the Blue Mountains Open.
"There isn't a whole lot of damage, only a few bumps and bruises, but I'm taking the next month off as a precautionary measure as the crash really knocked me about," she said.
With her recent form giving her a confidence boost, she plans to compete in next year's Australian titles in South Australia.
