More for the fans Tigers are ready to pounce

10 Mar, 2010 12:00 AM
THE long wait is almost over for Wests Tigers rugby league fans.

Kick-off for the 2010 NRL season is on Friday night but Tigers' faithful will have to wait a few days more.

Next Monday night, March 15, the Tigers tackle Manly at the Sydney Football Stadium at 7pm.

And the good news for Tigers' fans is there are four games at the revamped Campbelltown Sports Stadium this year.

That's one more than the three games played there each season in recent years.

The $8million third stage of the stadium is nearing completion.

The Tigers' first match at Campbelltown is round eight against the Sydney Roosters which is scheduled for the weekend of April30 to May2.

The other three Campbelltown games are round 15 versus Canberra, round 18 versus the Titans and round 23 versus Penrith.

Dates and times for all Campbelltown games will be released later by the NRL.

Wests Tigers boss Stephen Humphreys met with Campbelltown Council on Friday to discuss the stadium's progress. ``The ground improvements are coming along nicely,'' Humphreys said.

He said the ground capacity would comfortably fit 21,000 people.

He said the latest ground renovations were about extra comfort for the fans.

He said the Tigers were in a unique position in the NRL as their geographic boundaries stretch from the inner city, through the south-west to Macarthur and to the edge of the Southern Highlands region.

He said they have a ``wide catchment'' area for their fans and three home-ground venues: Campbelltown, Sydney Football Stadium and Leichhardt Oval.

``The challenge comes in making sure we can connect and engage with all our communities in our geographic areas, and especially in Macarthur,'' he said.

``We have multiple home ground venues, unlike most clubs. We want to continue to foster that. We're building that presence in the Macarthur area.''

In recent months the Wests Tigers opened a new retail outlet, Gear Zone, in Queen Street, Campbelltown, which has proved popular with the community.

And further good news is that Tigers' membership numbers are on the rise.

``Our membership numbers are up 50per cent on last year. `There's a lot excitement and anticipation with the new season starting. The vibe has been good in the league community.''
