Racer roars into contention

14 Oct, 2009 12:00 AM
ORANGEVILLE racing driver Daniel Erickson will fulfil his dream this weekend when he competes in the Formula Ford Festival at the Brands Hatch circuit in England.

The festival is considered an event in which future champions are discovered.

Past winners include Formula 1 drivers Jenson Button and Mark Webber.

Erickson will drive the Australian-built Spectrum 011c, the vehicle he raced in the British Formula Ford Championship.

``I'm so pleased to be given the opportunity to race at the festival,'' Erickson told the Advertiser from his base in England.

``It's something that I think every driver dreams to do and now I have got the chance to do it.

``We've raced there this series with good results and we know were we need to improve to go in with title hopes.''

Despite having less experience on the British circuits, driving on a smaller budget and having less testing time than his rivals, Erickson finished fifth in the Ford series and was the highest-placed debutant.

The 21-year-old scored one outright race victory, seven podium places, three pole positions and a fastest race lap during this year's 25-race series, which finished last week during the final round at Castle Combe in Wiltshire.

``Castle Combe was a testing time for me because we weren't 100 per cent sure of the set-up, as it was raining in qualifying. But we bit the bullet and got it slightly wrong,'' Erickson said.

``I qualified ninth for race one and 12th for race two.

``The first race went to plan but an unexpected stop-go penalty hampered a good run to the front.

``A safety car came out just after and worked in my favour to bring me to the rear of the field and I fought my way back to seventh.''

Erickson had a great start in the second race and finished in fourth place to secure a top-five finish in the championship.

The next step for the young driver is to raise the necessary funds to progress to the next level and to achieve his goal, burning rubber with the big boys in Formula 1.
