Some of the state’s best junior track and field stars spring from right here in Macarthur.
The Camden Little Athletics Club had a stellar season and have the medals to prove it.
The 600-athlete strong club had 150 competitors go to zone, 140 progress to region and 56 progressed to Little Athletics' NSW State Championships.
Club president Andrew Hreszczuk said the club won 18 medals and runner Joshua Azzopardi achieved the 100-metre state record in the under-17s boys race.
“I am immensely proud of the athletes who have worked hard to achieve their state success,” he said. “Who would have thought that a little club that runs out the back of the Camden Showground would do so well?”
Ten club members competed at the Australian Athletics Championships in March with five receiving medals.
Jordan Doris will likely go to the Junior Commonwealth Games and 12-year-old Nakeisha Brimble was selected in the NSW Athletic Squad.
Hreszczuk said support from the club, the athletes’ families, schools and coaches helped the club members achieve their goals.
“We have very hard-working coaches who specialise in sprinting, throwing and jumping,” he said.
Registration for the 2017/18 season will be held in August with the competition held at Camden Showground on Friday nights from September to March.
