Catholic claims of massive fee hikes shot down
Warnings the Turnbull government's school funding changes will force Catholic schools to hike their fees by $5000 a year have been rubbished by one of the country's largest Catholic archdioceses.
In a letter sent last week, the Archdiocese of Brisbane assured parents that next year's fees would be similar to this year and thanked the government for its "commitment to fair and equitable funding". Read more
Impact of bank levy 'trivial', Treasury secretary says
The head of the Treasury has dismissed the impact of the $6.2 billion budget levy on banks as "trivial", saying he expects it to have next to no impact on interest rates.
Asked at a Senate hearing whether he stood by the budget forecast that the levy on the liabilities of the big five banks would raise $6.2 billion over four years, Treasury secretary John Fraser said he did. Read more.
Windsor Road bridge almost complete
The Skytrain, which will be part of the Sydney Metro, is almost finished.
The second and final tower for the bridge was installed during a night-time operation at Rouse Hill on the weekend.
Installing steel cables that will run from the towers to the bridge, which will help strengthen the structure, is the final part of completing the Skytrain.
The Skytrain is a 4km elevated part of the Sydney Metro, which goes over Windsor Road and connects Rouse Hill and Kellyville. Read more.
Police operation shuts down Parramatta CBD
A major police operation in the Parramatta CBD on Monday ended after police deemed a suspicious package to be safe.
During the hour-long operation on Monday morning, several streets were shut down and access to the Westfield shopping centre was blocked.
The Parramatta bus interchange was closed, forcing buses to drop passengers on Station Street. Read more.
Bakers fire up for Pie of Origin
Mate against mate, state against state, pie against pie.
Two baker’s from both sides of the Tweed will battle it out in the sixth annual Pie of Origin.
Glenorie Bakery in Sydney’s The Hills region will take on Beefy’s Pies from south-east Queensland in a Pie of Origin clash, which will see both baker’s try to raise money for children’s hospitals during the State of Origin period. Read more.
Tuimoala Lolohea signs with Wests Tigers
Tuimoala Lolohea can play for the Wests Tigers as early as Saturday's NRL clash against St George Illawarra after joining his new teammates for training on Monday.
After weeks of lobbying for a release from the Warriors, utility Lolohea was finally let go last week and his two-and-a-half year deal with the second-last placed Tigers was confirmed on Monday. Read more (SMH)
