Less than a year after making her on-field debut Amy Sligar is an All-Australian representative.
The Camden teen only picked up Aussie Rules at the end of 2016 and her ascent to the top has been swift.
The fifteen-year-old was selected in the All Schools AFL Under-15s All-Australian squad last month.
“When I first found out I was shocked, I did not expect it,” she said.
“But once it sunk it I was very proud of myself and happy that my hard work was paying off.”
Amy and her twin sister Natalie were spotted by AFL NSW/ACT local area manager Ash Moeller during a match for their school, St Patrick’s College Campbelltown, and invited to try out for a club team.
They now play for the Camden Blues and love every moment.
Amy said her background in long-distance running and netball had prepared her well for the rigors of Aussie Rules.
“Amy has an elite running ability and a strong pair of hands over her head,” he said.
“Standing at 176 centimetres tall at only 15 years old, she has all the attributes to forge a career playing the great game.”
Amy was thrilled to watch the Great Western Sydney Giants women’s AFL team in their first Sydney game this year.
She found the skill and professionalism of the players to be highly inspirational.
“I’d never really considered AFL as a career before but once I saw that game my mind changed,” she said.
“I definitely think it’s something I could do with my life.”
The year 10 student said she loves watching professionals, both women and men, playing at elite levels.
“I like to see what they do and pick up some tips,” she said.
“But I haven’t singled out any players that I want to emulate because I’m still figuring out what position is best for me.”
Amy plays centre half-back for the All-Australian squad but moves around for the Camden Blues, trying out various positions.
She enjoys both the physicality and gameplay of AFL.
“I love keeping active and working on fitness,” she said.
“Everyone thinks I’m going over the top with training but I love it.
“I love spending my spare time working on my fitness.”
Amy hopes she and the Camden Blues Youth Girls can steer their team to victory in 2017.
She hopes even more girls in the Macarthur area will give the sport a go.
“I would encourage everyone to come out and kick the ball around,” she said.
“We’ve got some great parks that are a great place to start.”
