Demolition works have started at the site of the old Hope Christian School in Narellan.
The Richardson Road site is slated to become a school for children with special needs.
The new school was originally scheduled for enrolment in 2018 but delays have pushed works back.
The school is now expected to be ready for enrolments in 2019.
A Department of Education spokesman said the demolition of the former private school’s buildings started in the middle of September.
“All buildings, with the exception of the existing library, are being demolished,” he said.
“Construction works [of the new school buildings] are due to begin in late October or early November this year.
“It is anticipated that the construction of the school will be completed by the end of 2018 to enable student enrolments for the 2019 school year.”
The spokesman also said classroom materials discovered during the demolition process, such as chalkboards, desks and chairs could possibly be used depending on the condition of the items.
The new school will cater for students with moderate to severe physical and intellectual disabilities and learning needs from kindergarten to year 12.
Camden MP Chris Patterson told the Advertiser earlier this year he was delighted works at the school were on schedule.
“I am really glad we bought the site,” he said.

“There is a huge demand for a special needs school in the area.
“Principals and staff at schools across the region are saying the special needs school will be a fantastic addition to the area.”
The new school will include 12 purpose built classrooms, a new administration building, a hydrotherapy pool, a special programs room, covered outdoor learning areas and free play zones.
At least $10 million will be spent rebuilding the school.
The Department of Education spokesman said at 1.5 hectares, the site was a good size to accommodate the new school, and will be fully accessible for students with disabilities.
Narellan Public School has used the site since the state government purchased it in 2012, however, that won’t be the case once the new school open its doors.
