Nude vet calendar a success

Plenty of folks will spend next year looking at cheeky pictures of naked vet students and animals.

The annual Sydney University Veterinary School Nude Calendar, which features vet students from the university’s Camden campus and is shot at several Camden and Wollondilly farms, went on sale on Monday and has already proven to be a success.

Nude calendar committee member Courtney Turner told the Advertiser the team was “stoked” with the results so far.

“We’ve made $4000 and sold 200 copies since the calendar went on sale,” she said.

“We’ve only been getting the word out there for two weeks and we’ve already made it halfway to our goal.

“We’re all very happy with the results so far.”

About 40 final-year veterinary students took part in the 2018 calendar shoot – a tradition for the school – and bared all for a good cause.

The money raised this year goes to Rural and Remote Mental Health.

Ms Turner said the charity was chosen when the committee learned the suicide rate among veterinarians was four times higher than that of the general public.

“Rural and Remote Mental Health are going to come out to the campus and do a talk for the vet students,” she said.

“They’re very happy with how well the calendar is doing and the conversation it’s started.”

Ms Turner said she was most proud that people were starting to talk about mental health in the vet industry.

She is shocked at just how far-reaching reports of this year’s calendar have been.

“We were definitely surprised at how well it’s done this year,” she said.

“Triple J shared a video about the calendar and something like 400,000 people watched it.

“It’s made an impact and people are talking about mental health, which is what we wanted.”

Ms Turner said the response had been largely positive, but there was a small section of the online community who viewed the calendar negatively.

“To be honest, we were all expecting a little backlash about the sheep,” she said.

“People don’t understand that that is actually how you handle sheep.

“But most people have been really positive and we’re not going to respond to the negative comments.

“We’re happy and proud of what we’ve achieved.”

The calendar – themed ‘Shedding the Stigma’ – is available for $25 from nudecalendar.wixsite.com/website.
