The little athletics club with a big heart

Whether your child likes running, jumping or throwing, Wollondilly Little Athletics will make sure they have fun.

Any child from three years old to 16 can compete in a range of competitions at Tahmoor Oval on Friday nights.

The club is well into its season but little athletes can still come along to try out the activities.

Club president Nicole Hanger said the children were training to compete in the zone championships in November.

“We will compete against athletes from Bowral, Wollongong, Dapto and Northern Illawarra,” she said.

“The first, second and third from each discipline and age group will progress to the regional championships.”

Ms Hanger said the club, which was established in 1981, was growing each year.

“As the club gets bigger we have more talented children coming through who are achieving brilliant results,” she said.

Children can compete in running, long jump, high jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, javelin and hurdles.

“We also have a modified program for tiny tots who are three to five years old,” Ms Hanger said.

“The little ones like being out their with the big kids doing similar activities.”

Ms Hanger said the club was all about the children having fun, exercising and having a go.

“Our motto is family, fun and fitness,” she said.

“We have a great family atmosphere where parents assist on the Friday night.

“Kids from each age group are given McDonalds encouragement awards each week.

“It is great to see the kids get out there and have a go. Sometimes there are tears because the kids are tired but most of the time there are lots of smiles.

“Some kids are very competitive and are all about winning so they enjoy seeing their performances improve.

“All children receive a participation trophy at the end of the season because in my eyes all kids are the same whether they are an elite athlete or just having a go.

“Kids can come along for a free trial and if they like it then great but if, not at least they have given it a go.”

Ms Hanger said the athletes also form strong friendships that stay with them beyond athletics, and the kids social skills improve.

The season runs from September until March.
