Italy's World Cup campaign has gone from bad to worse with reports of a wild brawl between teammates after their shock 36-12 loss to Ireland.

World Cup officials have confirmed they have been made aware of an incident in which Italy's star fullback James Tedesco – a former Menangle resident and Camden Rams junior – was reportedly king hit by a teammate in a Cairns nightspot.

Channel 7 reports that Italy players were out drinking at the Pier Bar on Sunday night when Tedesco – who also attended St Gregory’s College Campbelltown – was allegedly struck by Shannon Wakeman.

The incident sparked a brawl which reportedly resulted in the team being ejected from the bar and a report filed with World Cup organisers.

It had been anticipated that Wakeman would be sacked from Cameron Ciraldo's Italian squad but he has travelled with them to Townsville for their next group match against the United States.

World Cup officials are investigating the incident.

“The RLWC has been made aware of an incident involving the Italian team in Cairns on Sunday night,” World Cup organisers said in a statement.

“The matter has been referred to the NRL Integrity Unit. It would be inappropriate to make any further comment until we receive a final report.”
