CCTV cameras at Banksia train station have captured images of a young man taking an unbelievably foolish risk crossing the train tracks.
The video, shown by 9 News, shows the man late at night waiting for a train to pass the platform on which he is standing.
As another train approaches from the opposite direction, he leaps from the platform and runs across the tracks in front of it.
He flings himself on to the platform, with the train inches away from smashing his legs and possibly dragging him on to the tracks.
Another young man goes checks if he is OK. It is not clear if they know each other.
Transport Minister Andrew Constance said the man’s actions “defied logic”.
“It is the most stupid reckless act you could undertake,” he said.
The government is looking at increasing penalties for trespassing on train tracks, which at present range from a fine of $400 to $5000.
Sydney Trains chief executive Howard Collins said the impact of this type of incident on staff could be horrendous.
‘”We know drivers who have never driven again, who have had to be counselled, supported for several months because of this behaviour,” he said.
