Melbourne might have the cup but Packsaddle Roadhouse has the undeniable reputation for holding one of the most unique race events in the state.
Thousands of kilometres away from Flemington Racecourse, the outback roadhouse north of Broken Hill, put its own twist on Melbourne Cup with novelty events, yabby races and, of course, fashions on the field.
With the Melbourne Cup run and won it was time for Packsaddle’s starters take their position for the annual yabby race.
While the punters shelled out for a bet, the yabbies clawed themselves into prime position.
It took the yabbies a little while to get into race mode but it was Shaun Mill’s winning yabby that crossed the line – at just a pinch – leaving the rest of the field to try and claim a position.
Once the race was done all yabbies went back into the dam.
“It’s really important in the bush to create something different for the locals and get people together,” Mia Degoumois from Packsaddle Roadhouse said.
“We hold this event every year and we always try to do something different.”
Fashions on the field was won by locals Sonja O’Connor and Sam Beven.
