What's a beach without sand?
That's what beachgoers encountered on Friday at Dee Why with waves making their way to the steps after the Bureau of Meteorology had earlier issued a hazardous surf warning for parts of the state.
The Northern Beaches Council closed the patrolled Dee Why Beach on Friday afternoon. ??? "There was nowhere to put the flags," a council spokesman said.
"There was no beach left."
Waverley Council said Tamarama Beach was also closed because of the surf conditions, but Bondi and Bronte beaches were operational. Randwick Council said Maroubra Beach was briefly closed and as of Friday afternoon there were "still some big sets coming through".
There were also reports of other beaches in NSW being closed due to the strong swell coming from the south.
"Surf and swell conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating, and swimming," the bureau said.
A bureau spokeswoman said there could be "significant wave height" of two to three metres on Saturday, although that would decrease during the weekend.
"We will be keeping an eye on it," she said. "There's a lot of power coming in."
After last weekend's wet weather, beachgoers were looking forward to a sunny forecast this weekend. While the weather should be fine, the bureau increased its hazardous surf warning to include all parts of the NSW except for the Eden Coast on Saturday.
