When they’re this cute, it’s no surprise labradors are the most popular dogs in the state.
The cuddly canines were named as the dog breed most popular with NSW residents over 2016/17, according to statistics from the Companion Animals Register.
While the top ranking is not reflected in Wollondilly, labradors do come in at number two with 1455 registered in the local government area, outranked by only German Shepherds.
Bargo labrador breeder Erin Charnock, of Eraky Labradors, said she wasn’t surprised the breed topped the list.
“They’re good all-round pets and suitable for a family environment,” she said. “I’ve found there’s always a steady desire for labrador puppies.”
Mrs Charnock and her husband got into labrador breeding as they both grew up with the dogs in their childhood. She said raising a labrador pup was a big commitment.
“They’re going to be around for 12-14 years and become a big part of your life.”
