Former Camden resident Emily Hurtz is one step closer to booking her flight to the Gold Coast for the Commonwealth Games next year.

The 27-year-old Hockeyroo was recently selected in the 25-member Australian senior women’s squad.

The selection in the squad comes just six months before the Commonwealth Games kick off.

With the World Cup also due to be held just months after the Gold Coast games, Hurtz said 2018 could turn out to be stellar year.

“I’m looking forward to 2018,” the Macquarie Fields Hockey Club junior said.

“I’ve always enjoyed international competition and I think whilst I’m still capable of playing at that level, I might as well and see where it leads.

“With 2018, two major tournaments makes it an amazing time to be involved (with the Australian side).”

The former Camden Public School and Elderslie High School student said she looked forward to the home crowd support, if selected in Commonwealth Games squad.

“I know there was quite a lot of hype around the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006 and I’m sure the Gold Coast public will embrace the games too,” she said.

“I played at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and even though it was overseas there was so much Australian support, so I can only imagine how nice it would be to play in our country.”

Hurtz broke a three year hiatus from the national team when she played in the November International Hockey Test Series against Japan in Adelaide.

Hockeyroos head coach Paul Gaudoin said her inclusion in the latest squad was vital.

“To have her back in is fantastic,” he said.

“She brings a lot of experience as a 27-year-old into our group and is clearly good enough to be there.”
