Turning 100 is certainly no easy feat.

But celebrating your 104th birthday is an outstanding achievement.

That’s exactly what Kilbride Estia Health resident Joyce Moran did on Sunday, December 17.

The mother of two, grandmother to eight and great grandmother to seven has lived at the aged care facility for five years.

Reaching the 104 milestone came as no surprise to her daughter, Jenny Philips.

“She was always gardening and walked everywhere. I think that is what has got her through everything,” Mrs Phillips said.

“I think she has lived so long because she was so active.

“The nurses at Kilbride said she’s wonderful. She doesn’t even take pills – only a vitamin D tablet.”

Mrs Moran still walks – with the aid of a walking stick – to and from the dining room at Kilbride every morning, lunch and dinner.

Her husband died at the age of 58, but Mrs Moran continued to live in her Beecroft home, on her own, for more than 40 years.

But Mrs Phillips said her mother certainly wasn’t confined by the borders of the north Sydney suburb.

“When my father passed away she started travelling,” she said.

“She went to South America, to India and all the way through to Tibet, and also went around Australia and camped.”

Kilbride’s lifestyle activities officer, Briony Cobbin, said Mrs Moran was the oldest residents who had lived at the facility.

“This is our first (104-year-old),” she said.

“We had a lady who was 102 but she passed a few years back.”

Mrs Cobbin said Mrs Moran was a pleasure to have around at the Gilead centre.

“She’s a very, very funny lady,” she said.

“She’s a bright lady and is really switched on. Mrs Moran is also very social and loves to talk to you about the old times.”

Mrs Moran’s family held a birthday celebration for her at the Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan, on Sunday.

Kilbride will also mark the 104 milestone with a special event at the Gilead centre on Wednesday.
