One Macarthur pub wants to help locals enjoy a beer with their best four-legged mate.
After Parramatta’s Collector Hotel launched ‘Yappy Hour’ residents took to the Advertiser Facebook page to say they would support the initiative being introduced closer to home.
The George IV Inn in Picton heard the call.
Manager Peta Cohen said she thought Yappy Hour was a “great idea”.
“My dog is here all the time anyway so we are pretty dog friendly as it is,” she said.
“It’s a good way for people to bring their dog along and enjoy a beer.
“I think it’s something we could definitely join in on – it sounds like a great idea.”
The Advertiser contacted pubs across Macarthur including Narellan Hotel, Macarthur Tavern and The Bradbury but none expressed interest in the initiative.
A Mount Annan Hotel spokeswoman said it wasn’t something they would do.
Sandra Munro took to the Advertiser Facebook page to praise the idea.
“[I] would love to go out for a drink with my doggy daughter, but it’s my cat who has a taste for alcohol, especially Baileys,” she said.
Fox Sinden posted, “To be honest, I'd rather dogs than children.”
From 2pm to 6pm every Saturday and Sunday at the Collecter Hotel in Parramatta, pet owners are encouraged to bring their dog to the front courtyard of the hotel and shout them a doggie beer or a puppacino.
Hotel owner Dan O’Hara said the happy hour for dogs was a way to be inclusive to customer companions.
“We all know the old saying that ‘dogs are a man’s best friend’ and we also know Aussies love going to the pub with their mates which was what sparked the idea behind Yappy Hour at the Collector Hotel,” he said.
Functions manager Victoria Dennis said she came up with the idea because there weren’t many places you could catch up with friends and take your dog.
“Dogs are more than pets, they become part of people’s families,” she said.
“We’re taking the term ‘family friendly’ to a new level.”
Ms Dennis is mum to Biggie the sausage dog.
“It’s a great way to include dogs when you are having a drink with friends and I must admit, Biggie loves the doggie beer,” she said.
Biggie is now looking for a few mates to join him and the Collector Hotel would like to welcome your dog.
