You know the songs, but do you know the story?
We Will Rock You, the musical phenomenon based on all of Queen’s biggest hit songs, is coming to Campbelltown this week, in a NSW first.
Woftam Productions, a local theatre company, will bring the wacky and outrageous characters from the popular Ben Elton musical to life from this Friday.
Woftam director Peter Novakovich said the show would be a must-see.
“Audiences will get the vibe and energy of a Queen concert plus a fun stage show, all at only a fraction of the price,” he said.
“Ben Elton wrote a script that gets the point across in a funny way, and it's so colourful and fast-paced. Hearing the harmonies done live is a magical experience – especially Bohemian Rhapsody.
“When Queen perform Rhapsody live they never perform the big operatic middle section: they use a recording. We Will Rock You lets audiences hear the whole song performed live in full harmony by a large cast.”
The musical is set in the future, where rock music has been banned and the evil Killer Queen (played by Kat Shaw and Liz Wilson) rules the world, dictating via social media what songs to listen to and what products to buy.
It’s up to rebel Galileo Rigaro (James Cassar) and his girlfriend Scaramouche (Lauren Waite) to overthrow Killer Queen and bring back rock’n’roll.
The audience will enjoy a host of Queen songs, from Another One Bites the Dust and Crazy Little ThingCalled Love to We Are the Champions and Radio Ga Ga.
Novakovich said it was “super exciting” to bring such a celebrated show to local audiences as he had always loved Queen’s music.
“While Queen's songs have a wild rock'n'roll element to them, many of them also have a story-telling aspect, or develop a character in the same way that songs from musicals do,” he said.
“The very nature of these songs screamed out for them to be put in a staged context and it also gave musicals permission to like rock music.”
He said the cast of 27 (predominantly locals) were all spectacular.
