Drivers who park illegally along Rockford Road, Tahmoor near Mermaids Pool will be hit with a $257 fine.
Wollondilly Council rangers have increased their patrols at the entrance to the popular watering hole and will issue fines if cars are parked unsafely along the road.
There is no public parking or on-road parking on Rockford Road near the Mermaids Pool.
Council’s general manager Luke Johnson said parking was prohibited along Rockford Road, as signposted, and numerous fines have been issued to people who have parked illegally.
“I am sure our community recognises the important safety reasons for this approach by the council,” Mr Johnson said.
Those who visit the site are reminded not to trespass on private property to access Mermaids Pool.
Mr Johnson again warned about the dangers of entering the water at the site.
“Mermaids Pool is an extremely dangerous place and not suitable for recreational swimming,” he said.
“Multiple deaths and serious injuries have occurred at the location in the past few years.
“If you jump or dive into the waterhole, there is a severe risk of harm due to uneven water depth, hidden obstacles such as rocks or snags and currents under the surface.
“There is no safe exit point from the waterhole and many people have slipped and fallen while trying to get out of the water.
“The site is difficult to access and when incidents occur they put a heavy strain on local emergency services.
“Poor mobile phone coverage adds to the obvious risks.”
