Wests Tigers had a reality check at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Saturday night.
A week after beating 2017 grand finalists, the North Queensland Cowboys 30-16 in Cairns, the black, white and orange were outclassed by a the Cronulla Sharks, 24-12.
It took only three minutes for the Sharks to open the scoring through Ricky Leutele.
Two more tries to Valentine Holmes and Sosaia Feki – plus a penalty goal – saw the visitors head to shed at halftime up 20-0.
Tries to former Canterbury Bulldog Corey Thompson and Pita Godinet closed the gap to eight points, however a late try to Cronulla winger Sione Katoa sealed a comfortable victory.
The second trial was another opportunity for several of the club’s new recruits to impress coach Ivan Cleary.
Thompson was busy at fullback and looks to have wrestled the number one jumper away from Tuimoala Lolohea – who was expected to fill the void at the back left by James Tedesco.
Wests Tigers will kick off their season against the Sydney Roosters at ANZ Stadium on Saturday, March 10.
