Camden racers tackle tough Townsville track

While locals were freezing last weekend, Tim Brook and Cameron Crick headed for warmer weather at the the Townsville 400.

The Reid Park street circuit proved brutal on the Toyota 86 Racing Series, with a host of crashes claiming a number of drivers.

Oran Park resident Tim Brook managed to avoid much of the drama to record his best result of the 2017 season, a third place.

Brook said it would keep his title hopes alive.

“The weekend exceeded expectations in a lot of ways,” he said.

“I felt optimistic coming into the weekend, I put in a lot of hard work since Phillip Island as the car needed a bit of a tune up – as did the driver.”

In the second race of the weekend a multi-car crash took out much of the field.

Brook escaped with little more than a scrape to the left side of his car.

He is now looking ahead to the third round of the series which will take him to familiar territory.

“I'm looking forward now to go back home to Sydney Motorsport Park, where we've done a lot of our testing,” he said.

“We're still in contention so it's important for us to go out there and have a good weekend. I'm looking forward to it.”

Camden’s Cameron Crick also notched up an impressive race result.

After placing 15th in the qualifying session, Crick managed to bounce back in race one making his way into seventh place.

The crash in race two left the young driver with minor damage to his left front guard.

“The team and I continued to work on the car throughout the weekend, making a lot of gains as a result, and I’m very pleased to have come away as a top-10 finisher,” he said.

“While I didn’t have the best of runs in the opening round of the series at Phillip Island, last weekend’s round in Townsville was certainly a step in the right direction.

“I’m looking forward to racing at home for the next round in August and I’m feeling confident that I’ll be able to continue to turn things around and crack into the top five.”

Both racers will take on the Sydney SuperSprint at Sydney Motorsport Park on August 18-20.
