An 11-year-old girl who was shot in the face at Deloraine has a “long road ahead” as she continues to recover in hospital.
Phoenix Newitt was rushed to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne last week after a man allegedly fired a gun at her mother’s car, hitting the young girl in the face as she sat in the back seat.
She was in a critical condition with bullet fragments lodged in her face, neck and heart.

On Sunday night, family friend Suzie Haydon shared the news online that Phoenix had woken up in hospital.
“Excellent news for her family and friends, so happy, she has a long road ahead, what a strong brave little girl,” she wrote.
Ms Haydon has also created a gofundme page for Phoenix, aiming to raise $20,000 for the Newiit family.
A 25-year-old Deloraine man is due to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court on Thursday, charged over the incident.
He is facing one count of causing grievous bodily harm and one count of recklessly discharging a firearm. He has yet to enter a plea.
