Pistol shooters aim for Commonwealth Games

Two Macarthur pistol shooters have their sights set firmly on the Commonwealth Games.

Kerry Bell and Mathurot Thadaprasit from the Campbelltown Liverpool District Shooting Club will both compete in the Commonwealth Games Test event in Brisbane next month, with an aim at qualifying for the Gold Coast games next year.

Thadaprasit told the Advertiser she never thought she would qualify for the test event, let alone make it to the real deal.

“Kerry is the one that I thought would do it,” she said.

“He’s been training so hard.”

The international event will separate the good shooters from the best and will help determine selection for the Australian team at the Commonwealth Games.

Thadaprasit said it was every shooter’s dream to represent their country in the Commonwealth or Olympic games and she would love the opportunity to do just that.

The IT worker by day said it was the mental challenge of pistol shooting that drew her to the sport.

“You’re competing against other people’s scores, but when it comes down to in you’re competing against yourself,” she said.

“It’s a very internal sport.”

Both Thadaprasit and Bell have been competing in pistol shooting for the past five years, progressing up the ranks quick, and consider each other great friends.

Bell has been selected for the Men’s 50m B Team and Men’s 10m Air A Team, while Thadaprasit has been selected for the Women’s 10m Air C Team.

Club secretary Geoff Young said he was hugely proud of the progress the two shooters had made.

“We are very proud of the achievements of these two athletes,” he said.

“They have practised hard and long and received quality coaching from the best coaches in the country.

“Our club has attempted to assist with the finances of these two members as much as we can and additional sponsorship would be extremely beneficial for their continued advancement.”
